Five Happiness is a Chinese Restaurant that was a flooded
after Hurricane Katrina. The building had to be gutted.
In the interim, a second building was up and running sooner –
the Imperial Room across the street. Normally it is used for parties. A mandala relief sculpture hung on the wall in this building.

acrylic on canvas, 5" x 5"

My painting is an abstract interpretation of the sculpture. I used colors from the banquet room interior. Details with dots are always tricky. Eventually the refurbished building was ready. That will be the subject of another dot painting.

  1. My husband teaches at Xavier, so lunches at Five Happiness weren't uncommon for him. I haven't been there in years, myself. As good as I thought it was, Trey Yuen in Mandeville mops the floor with it.
(Do I sound enough like an elitist Northshorist there? *LOL*)

Five Happiness used to have two other businesses next to it. Gradually it expanded. At lunch the place is still packed. So, I’m not the only one who enjoys eating there. I photographed the new interior for my blog pic journal. It doesn’t have the typical red stained wood interior anymore.

As for Northshore elitism, it’s still not the city I’m fond – in terms of culture, architecture, warts and all. People not from this area know where New Orleans is when you say the name. Saying you are from Covington, Gretna, Kenner, Mandeville, Marrero, Metairie, Slidell or Westwego will only get you a look of puzzlement. I still put Metairie for a hometown, but elsewhere I make sure to include New Orleans in tags and bio.

  3. Hi Mo! Hey did you ever hear a leopard can't change his spots? I guess you can change your dots, though. :) I like your new avatar. It surprised me for a moment though because I thought, "Who's that?" HA! :D

I like this piece and the colors you chose. Now I'm off to take a peek at the pic journal.

I hope things are starting to get back to normal for you by now.

Every two or three months I like to change up avatars. The painting I just changed to is one I’ve been anxious to use for a quite a while now. It happens that this is the right moment. On various profile pages elsewhere I’ve made backgrounds out of my photographs taken at Audubon Zoo this past summer. The red, white and black avatar never quite worked with those backgrounds. The green and black one is a much better fit.

As for my routine returning to normal, there are still some loose ends to handle and chores that need attention, but I’m mostly caught up. October is a busy event month. Too many activities all happen at once. “Art for Art’s Sake” kicks off the art season next Saturday and the New Orleans Film Festival runs the 10th through the 16th. I will block out time for the film fest. I just have to start planning what art shows I want to enter and what art will be ready for those art shows.
