da

For the last three years, on Christmas Day, I’ve gone with my family to La Côte Brasserie at the Renaissance Arts Hotel in the Arts District in New Orleans. What’s unique about this hotel is that the lobby and restaurant are all littered with art. There are even two skylight areas on the second floor with sculptures. The first year we ate there, I didn’t think to bring my camera. The last two years I remembered.

acrylic on canvas, 5" x 5"

What particularly grabbed my eye was the carpet with its spiral design. For this painting, I took the carpet colors and added a dot spiral on top. This is one of my favorite pieces from this batch of dot art.

  1. Very cool! That carpet it something else--I wouldn't want to be overly drunk around it. Talk about the spins! *L*

  3. Hey there, Mo, just stopping in to say Hi! Hope you're having a good day. :)

Great way to adapt the colors from the carpet and make it into something of your own. It's quite beautiful!

It’s been a slow groggy kind of day.

As for the carpet, I am a sucker for bright colored spirals. A few years ago I drew a color pencil piece called “Curls Gone Wild.” By the way, I like seeing the word “beautiful” in a sentence about my work.

  5. "Curls Gone Wild"--HA HA HA! Love the play on words AND the colored pencil spirals in the piece. It is indeed beautiful artwork, too!

There now you've heard the word "beautiful" twice in one day about your art. That ought to liven up your groggy day. :D

OK, now I’m blushing. ‘Glad you liked my punny drawing. By the way I completed that piece at the beginning of 2005 – the year of Hurricane Katrina and many other storms.

I mention this because of a series of spiral paintings I painted in 1998. You see, I named the pieces using the Atlantic Storm Names List for 1998. And the kicker is that the day of the scheduled reception, Hurricane George hit New Orleans. The reception had to be pushed back a whole week.

So, I have to be cautious about making spiral art. : D

  7. You put a whole new "spin" on the phrase "painting up a storm." :D

I went to see your storm spiral paintings and I liked them. Of course, once I was there, I had to keep browsing. Your work just draws me in and makes me want to see more. Thanks for adding some color to my world today! Hope you have a good weekend, Mo. :)

But wait, there’s more! The other half of my earlier works are located on my blog mind places. The pieces are my surreal works. Some of them also started by slinging paint.
