The source for this idea came from a black sweater that was adorned with brightly colored beads in the shape of flowers. A woman was wearing it behind the counter at a local deli. Anyway, I liked the pattern of the beads. That’s how my process began.

acrylic on canvas, 5" x 5"

But as I started to think about how I wanted to paint an image, I decided to go a different route. Instead of copying the lines created by beads, I decided to make petal and leaf shapes with dots. I was more interested in having shapes of contrasting colors rather than lines. Also, I wanted to make sure it came out as bright as possible given I was starting with a dark background.

  3. Very nice, Mo. Christmas poinsettia is what the flower looks like to me. Whenever I stop and think how much time it must have taken you to paint each little dot in your work, it amazes me. You always are so meticulous and create such detail, all from hundreds of little dots. I just would never have the patience to paint something like that.

Ha . . . I was wondering who was going to bring up that it looked like a poinsettia. That was not my plan. It sort of just came out that way when I painted.

Yes the dots do take a while to finish. Experience doesn’t take the work out of it. It is still painstaking and time-consuming. The reward is how it looks in end. That’s what I think about to keep myself going.
